It Takes a Team: Reaching Out to the Community
Symposium Focus
Cleft care involves a specialized, multidisciplinary team. However, we need to reach out and partner with our colleagues in the communities where our patients live, to be maximally effective and efficient.
This year we hope to build on that collaboration. Our featured visiting speaker is Michael Karnell, Ph.D, a nationally recognized professor of speech pathology at the University of Iowa, and past president of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association. He and his speech colleagues, including Julia A. Hobbs, MA, CCCSLP, Barbara Moore, MA, CCCSLP will reprise an updated practical speech workshop.
Jim Mulick, DDS, Team orthodontic consultant at Saint John's and UCLA has developed an orthodontic primer for community practitioners, with a faculty including Saint John’s orthodontists Stanley M. Miyawaki, DMD, MS, and Amy Gimlen, DDS, as well as community providers Dr. Mark Urata from CHLA and USC and Dr. Stephen Yen from UCLA. The joint session features updates on from the multiple specialists on our team, including our newest member, geneticist Valerie Watiker, and our returning guest Dianne Mulick-Altuna, MS, CCC-SLP.
