The Margie Petersen Breast Center at Saint John’s Health Center offers comprehensive imaging services for breast cancer screening and diagnosis including full-field digital mammography, ultrasound and ultrasound-guided core biopsies, MRI and stereotactic breast biopsy procedures.
Digital mammography is one of the most recent advances in breast imaging. Each Saint John’s mammography unit is equipped with a digital receptor and utilizes dedicated computers instead of conventional x- ray film. Mammograms, performed by a technologist, are viewed electronically by a radiologist on computer screens designed for optimal viewing. The images are also read in conjunction with CAD (computer-aided detection) software. Digital mammography provides a clearer, more accurate image of the breast and can aid in the earlier detection of breast cancer.
This state-of-the-art technology is the first step in the screening and diagnostic breast imaging process. If an abnormality is found, the area of concern can be imaged with ultrasound and/or MRI and the patient may need to undergo a Biopsy as needed—based upon the interpretation and recommendations by our board-certified radiologists.
These highly sophisticated and integrated services create a more efficient process allowing shorter examination times, quicker results and ultimately more convenience and satisfaction for the patient.
